New! Suntainability in cataract sugery in Greece: Take the survey
EyeSustain is a global coalition of eye societies, organizations and ophthalmologists collaborating to make ophthalmic care and surgery more sustainable.
The initiative is supported financially by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).
The Mission
- Engage, network, and educate our global ophthalmic community about more sustainable practices
- Collaborate with industry to reduce our carbon footprint and surgical waste
- Support research and innovative solutions that reduce ophthalmology’s environmental impact
- Collaborate with other medical specialties to reduce the carbon footprint of our healthcare system
- Support advocacy and education about the public health impact of climate change
HSIOIRS and EyeSustain

The Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery warmly embraced this initiative and is honored to be a member of this global coalition.
HSIOIRS is part of the EyeSustain Global Council (ESGC) and has pledged to educate, advocate and collaborate to advance sustainability of quality eye care and surgery. The HSIOIRS representatives to the ESGC are Dr. Elisavet Patsoura, ophthalmic surgeon, HSIOIRS General Secretary and Dr. Rodanthi Christina Bartzoulianou, young surgeon, HSIOIRS society member.
Dr. David Chang, chair of this global coalition, delivered an awakening speech entitled “Our collective challenge to reduce surgical waste”, during the Opening Ceremony of the 37th HSIOIRS Congress in Athens (2-4 March 2023). Watch the video on our youtube channel:
